British English Number Rules

British English has specific conventions for writing numbers in words that differ from American English. Understanding these rules is essential for formal writing:

  • “And” after hundreds: In British English, “and” is used between the hundreds and the remainder — two hundred and fifty, not two hundred fifty.
  • Hyphens in compound tens: Numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine use a hyphen — thirty-eight, forty-six, seventy-two.
  • No “and” between major groups: Two thousand five hundred is correct; two thousand and five hundred is not standard for formal British use.
  • Thousands and millions: These are simply appended — one million two hundred thousand.

When Do You Need to Write Numbers in Words?

There are many situations where writing numbers in words is required or preferred:

  • Cheques: UK banks require the amount to be written in both figures and words. An error in the words could invalidate the cheque.
  • Legal documents: Contracts, wills, and deeds often specify amounts in words to prevent ambiguity or fraud.
  • Academic writing: Style guides often require numbers below a certain value to be written as words.
  • Formal correspondence: Business letters and official communications frequently spell out numbers for clarity.
